Totakashtakam 

Adi Sankaracharya one of the chief disciple of Lord Sankara composed an octad of verses i.e., totakashtakam in praising his Master Lord Sankara. The beautiful totaka is with difficult composition but his very devotional and shows the spirit of Sankaracharyas towards his Lord. Hence he was himself given the name Touakacarya. Every word of this exquisite totaka speaks on the utter devotion of its author to Sankara. The hymn is as follows…

VIDITAKILA SASTRA SUDHA JALATHE
MAHITOPA NISATKATHI TARTHANIDHE
HRDAYEKALAYE VIMALAM SARANAM
BHAVA SANKARA DESIKA ME SARANAM

AHIMAM STURIVATRA VIBHASI GURO

Not even a single branch of knowledge has been understood by me correctly. Not even the least wealth do i possess, o teacher. Bestow on me quickly thy natural grace. Be thou my refuge o master, sankara


Sankaracharya prays like this that Sankara is my Guru and my Guru is all to me. There is nothing equal to the Guru; nothing superior to him. He is the dispeller of the darkness of ignorance. There can be no greater good than the removal of ignorance. Praying the Lord with this totaka fulfils all the divine needs.
